Hurricane season in San Blas, Panama and ColombiaHurricane season in San Blas Islands, Panama and Colombia

Hurricane season for the northern hemisphere is from June to December every year. At this time of the year, tropical depressions are formed north of the equator in the Atlantic Ocean. These tropical depressions travel in a north-westerly direction towards the Caribbean.

Some of these tropical depressions turn into heavier storms, called either a tropical storm or hurricane, depending on its strength. Hurricanes cannot form south of the 10th latitude and San Blas, Panama and Colombia are regions that all are found bellow the 10th latitude. In other words, no, hurricanes cannot hit this region of the Caribbean.

However, ocean effects and some weather effects may still hit south of the 10th latitude. In the case of hurricanes that pass further north in the Caribbean one may experience more waves even down in the San Blas, Panama and Colombian regions of the Caribbean. If a hurricane or strong tropical depression passes close on a southern route there may be heavy rainfalls in this region as well as dangerously large waves.

All conditions relating to hurricanes and tropical depressions in the Caribbean that may affect your sailing in San Blas, Panama and Colombia are broadcasted by weather forecast. Since these are not direct effects, but rather secondary effects of something happening somewhere else, forecasts are good for the region.

The captains will have a good date to make decisions for the safety of your trip. In the case that the captain finds the conditions not safe to sail the trip will be postponed or canceled if the current conditions will last a long time. In the period of our business between 2011 and 2019 this has happened only two times.
